How the Carbon Dioxide Converter Works

The Carbon Dioxide Converter divides CO₂ mass by the density of the phase you have. The default 0.001842 kg/L (1.842 kg/m³) fits CO₂ gas at 20°C (68°F) and 1 atm.

  1. Identify the phase

CO₂ exists as gas, pressurized liquid, solid dry ice or supercritical fluid.

  2. Pick the density

Read the density for your phase in the table.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the CO₂ mass in kilograms.

  4. Read the volume

Gas results come out large; divide by 1,000 for m³.

Carbon Dioxide Converter Formula

The CO₂ formula is V = m ÷ ρphase. One kilogram of CO₂ gas fills about 543 L at 20°C and 1 atm.

Vgas (L) = m (kg) ÷ 0.001842
Vdry ice (L) = m ÷ 1.56
ρphase
CO₂ density for the phase, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Soda maker cylinder (425 g): 0.425 ÷ 0.001842 = 231 L of gas.
  • Dry ice block: 10 kg ÷ 1.56 = 6.41 L.
  • Beverage cylinder (liquid at 20°C): 6 kg ÷ 0.773 = 7.76 L of liquid.

Carbon Dioxide Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of CO₂ gas fills 543 liters at 20°C, while 1 kg of dry ice fills 0.641 liters. The table lists 7 CO₂ states.

What is a Carbon Dioxide Converter?

A Carbon Dioxide Converter is a calculator that converts CO₂ mass into volume for the gas, liquid, solid or supercritical state.

Carbon dioxide gas is 1.52 times denser than air, so CO₂ settles in cellars, pits and tank bottoms. Concentrations above 5% by volume cause headaches and confusion.

CO₂ has no liquid phase at 1 atm. Solid dry ice sublimates straight into gas at −78.5°C (−109.3°F), and liquid CO₂ needs at least 5.18 bar.

What are the Uses of a Carbon Dioxide Converter?

There are 5 main uses of a Carbon Dioxide Converter.

  • Beverage carbonation

Bars convert cylinder kg into kegs carbonated.

  • Dry ice shipping

Couriers convert dry ice kg into box volume and gas release.

  • Greenhouse enrichment

Growers convert CO₂ dosing into ppm targets.

  • Fire suppression

Engineers size CO₂ systems by room volume.

  • Carbon accounting

Analysts picture tonnes of CO₂ as gas volume.
