How the Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Works

The Conversion Uncertainty Calculator converts kilograms to liters, then combines the scale error and the density error into one volume tolerance.

  1. Enter mass and density

Type the measured mass and the density value in the calculator to get the nominal volume.

  2. List both errors

Write down the scale tolerance (such as ±0.01 kg) and the density tolerance (such as ±0.002 kg/L).

  3. Turn errors into percentages

    Divide each tolerance by its value: 0.01 ÷ 10 = 0.1%.

  4. Combine with the root-sum-square rule

Square both percentages, add them and take the square root. Apply that percentage to the volume.

Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Formula

The volume uncertainty formula is ΔV ÷ V = √[(Δm ÷ m)² + (Δρ ÷ ρ)²] for independent mass and density errors.

V = m ÷ ρ
ΔV ÷ V = √[(Δm/m)² + (Δρ/ρ)²]
Δm
Mass uncertainty, kg
Δρ
Density uncertainty, kg/L
ΔV
Resulting volume uncertainty, L

Worked Examples

  • Lab scale: 10 kg ± 0.01 kg (0.10%) and 1.000 ± 0.002 kg/L (0.20%) give ±0.224%, so the result is 10.000 ± 0.022 L.
  • Floor scale: 500 kg ± 1 kg (0.20%) and 0.832 ± 0.0125 kg/L (1.50%) give ±1.51%, so 601.0 L ± 9.1 L.
  • Density dominates: a 0.05% scale and a 2% density guess give ±2.001%, so measuring density pays off first.

Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Conversion Table

A 0.1% mass error and a 0.5% density error give a 0.51% volume error. The table shows combined uncertainty for a 100 L nominal volume.

What is a Conversion Uncertainty Calculator?

A Conversion Uncertainty Calculator is a tool that estimates how much a kilograms to liters result can be off, based on the accuracy of the scale and the density value.

Every conversion carries two error sources: the weighing and the density figure. The two errors combine by root-sum-square, not by simple addition, when they come from independent sources.

The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) sets the root-sum-square method used here. Accredited labs report results as value ± expanded uncertainty, usually with a coverage factor k = 2 for 95% confidence.

What are the Uses of a Conversion Uncertainty Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of a Conversion Uncertainty Calculator.

  • Lab reports

Analysts state volume results with a ± tolerance for ISO/IEC 17025 audits.

  • Custody transfer

Traders check that metered volumes fall inside contract tolerance.

  • Filling compliance

Packers confirm net contents stay within legal metrology limits.

  • Equipment choice

Buyers decide whether a better scale or a better density meter reduces error more.
