How the Measured Density Calculator Works
The Measured Density Calculator divides a sample mass by its measured volume and returns density in kg/L. The calculator labels the second field Measured Volume (L).
Weigh the empty vessel
Tare a graduated cylinder, beaker or pycnometer on a scale.
Fill and read the volume
Pour the sample to a known mark and read the volume at the bottom of the meniscus.
Weigh the sample
Record the net mass in kilograms (grams ÷ 1,000).
Enter both values
Type the mass and the volume; the result shows density in kg/L, equal to g/cm³.
Measured Density Calculator Formula
The measured density formula is ρ = m ÷ V. Mass in kilograms over volume in liters gives kg/L.
- ρ
- Density, kg/L
- m
- Net sample mass, kg
- V
- Measured sample volume, L
Worked Examples
- Cooking oil sample: 0.460 kg in 0.500 L gives ρ = 0.920 kg/L.
- Syrup in a 100 mL flask: 132.6 g ÷ 100 mL = 1.326 kg/L.
- Rock by displacement: 0.540 kg raising water by 0.200 L gives ρ = 2.700 kg/L, a match for granite or aluminium.
Measured Density Calculator Conversion Table
A 0.500 L sample weighing 0.460 kg has a density of 0.920 kg/L. The table pairs sample readings with the density and a likely match.

What is a Measured Density Calculator?
A Measured Density Calculator is a tool that finds the density of a sample from its weighed mass and measured volume.
Published densities describe a typical product. A measured density describes the exact batch in front of you, including its temperature, concentration and air content.
Accuracy depends on the volume method. A 100 mL class A cylinder reads to ±0.5 mL (0.5%), a pycnometer reaches ±0.01%, and an oscillating U-tube density meter reaches ±0.0001 g/cm³.
What are the Uses of a Measured Density Calculator?
There are 5 main uses of a Measured Density Calculator.
Product identification
Technicians identify an unlabeled liquid by matching its density.
Concentration checks
Brewers and syrup makers track sugar content through density.
Quality control
QC labs confirm each batch falls inside the density specification.
Science lessons
Students measure the density of water, oil and coins.
Fraud detection
Buyers detect watered-down milk, honey or fuel.
