How the Mixture Volume Calculator Works

The Mixture Volume Calculator divides the total mass of a blend by the measured density of the final mixture. The default 1.05 kg/L is a placeholder for your measured value.

  1. Mix the components

Combine all components and stir until uniform.

  2. Measure the mixture density

Weigh a known volume of the mix, or use a hydrometer or density meter.

  3. Enter mass and density

Type the total mass and the measured density.

  4. Read the true volume

The result includes any shrinkage or swelling from mixing.

Mixture Volume Calculator Formula

The mixture formula is Vmix = mtotal ÷ ρmix. Volume change on mixing equals ideal volume minus actual volume.

Vmix = mtotal ÷ ρmix, measured
ΔV = Σ(mi/ρi) − Vmix
ρmix
Measured density of the final mixture, kg/L
ΔV
Volume contraction (positive) or expansion (negative)

Worked Examples

  • 50% ethanol by weight: ideal volume per kg = 1.1344 L, measured = 1 ÷ 0.9139 = 1.0942 L, so the mix shrinks 3.54%.
  • 20 kg of the 50% mix: 20 ÷ 0.9139 = 21.884 L.
  • Sugar syrup: 1 kg sugar + 1 kg water measures 1.2296 kg/L, so 2 kg = 1.627 L.

Mixture Volume Calculator Conversion Table

Ethanol and water shrink by up to 3.5% in volume when mixed. The table compares ideal and measured volumes per 1 kg of mix at 20°C.

What is a Mixture Volume Calculator?

A Mixture Volume Calculator is a tool that finds the true volume of a blend from its total mass and its measured density.

Some liquids pack tighter together than apart. Ethanol and water molecules form hydrogen bonds that pull the mix into a smaller volume than the two liquids separately.

Other blends swell. Acetone and carbon disulfide expand on mixing. A measured density captures either effect, which a sum of component volumes misses.

What are the Uses of a Mixture Volume Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of a Mixture Volume Calculator.

  • Spirit blending

Distillers predict final volume after cutting with water.

  • Chemical blending

Plants size tanks for blended products.

  • Fuel blending

Terminals convert blended tonnage into liters.

  • Lab mixtures

    Students measure volume contraction experiments.
