How the Nitrogen Converter Works
The Nitrogen Converter divides nitrogen mass by gas density at the stated conditions. The default 0.001165 kg/L (1.165 kg/m³) fits nitrogen gas at 20°C (68°F) and 1 atm.
Enter the nitrogen mass
Type the N₂ mass in kilograms.
Choose gas or liquid
Use 0.001165 kg/L for gas at 20°C or 0.807 kg/L for liquid nitrogen (LN₂).
Read the volume
The gas result gives free volume at 1 atm.
Check dewar sizes
The table converts LN₂ dewars into mass and gas volume.
Nitrogen Converter Formula
The nitrogen formula is Vgas = m ÷ 1.165 kg/m³ at 20°C. One liter of LN₂ boils into about 694 L of gas.
- 1.165
- N₂ gas density at 20°C, 1 atm, kg/m³
- 0.807
- LN₂ density at −196°C, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 1 kg of N₂ gas: 1 ÷ 0.001165 = 858 L.
- 50 L LN₂ dewar: 50 × 0.807 = 40.35 kg = 34.6 m³ of gas.
- Tire inflation: a car tire holds about 0.04 m³ of N₂ at 2.4 bar gauge, roughly 0.16 kg.
Nitrogen Converter Conversion Table
1 liter of liquid nitrogen weighs 0.807 kg and boils into about 693 liters of gas. The table converts LN₂ dewar sizes.

What is a Nitrogen Converter?
A Nitrogen Converter is a calculator that converts nitrogen mass into gas or liquid volume.
Nitrogen (N₂) makes up 78.08% of air by volume. Nitrogen is inert at room temperature, so industry uses it to blanket tanks, purge pipelines and pack food.
Liquid nitrogen boils at −195.8°C (−320.4°F). Labs and clinics use LN₂ for cryopreservation, freezing samples, and removing skin lesions.
What are the Uses of a Nitrogen Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Nitrogen Converter.
Food packaging
Packers convert N₂ usage per pack into kg per shift.
Pipeline purging
Engineers size nitrogen volumes for purges.
Cryogenic storage
Labs convert dewar liters into hold time and refill mass.
Tire inflation
Shops convert generator output into tire fills.
