How the Canola Oil Converter Works

The Canola Oil Converter divides canola oil mass by a density that falls as the oil heats. The default 0.915 kg/L fits canola at 20°C (68°F).

  1. Enter the mass

Type the canola or rapeseed oil weight in kilograms.

  2. Match the temperature

Use the table for cold, room or frying temperatures.

  3. Type the density

Enter the value for your temperature, such as 0.808 kg/L at 180°C (356°F).

  4. Read the volume

The result shows how far a fryer level rises as oil heats.

Canola Oil Converter Formula

The canola oil formula is V = m ÷ ρ(T), with ρ(T) ≈ 0.929 − 0.00067 × T kg/L for T in °C.

V = m ÷ ρ(T)
ρ(T) ≈ 0.929 − 0.00067 × T
T
Oil temperature, °C
ρ(T)
Canola density at T, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Room temperature: 10 kg ÷ 0.915 = 10.93 L.
  • Frying at 180°C: 10 kg ÷ 0.808 = 12.37 L, about 13% more volume.
  • Cold storage at 5°C: 10 kg ÷ 0.926 = 10.80 L.

Canola Oil Converter Conversion Table

Canola oil density drops from 0.929 kg/L at 0°C to 0.808 kg/L at 180°C. The table shows 10 kg (22 lb) of canola oil at 9 temperatures.

What is a Canola Oil Converter?

A Canola Oil Converter is a calculator that converts canola oil weight to volume using a density matched to oil temperature.

Canola is a low-erucic-acid rapeseed bred in Canada in the 1970s. The name joins "Canada" and "oil, low acid". Canola oil contains less than 2% erucic acid and about 7% saturated fat.

Canola oil has a smoke point near 204°C (400°F). Fryer oil at 180°C takes up about 13% more space than the same oil at room temperature, so fryers carry separate cold and hot fill lines.

What are the Uses of a Canola Oil Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Canola Oil Converter.

  • Fryer level setting

Kitchens set cold fill marks that rise to the hot line.

  • Crushing plant yield

Crushers convert oil output tonnage into tank liters.

  • Biodiesel feedstock

Producers convert rapeseed oil mass for transesterification batches.

  • Baking substitutions

Bakers swap butter for canola oil by weight and volume.
