How the Sand Converter Works

The Sand Converter divides sand mass by sand bulk density. The default 1.60 kg/L fits dry, loose building sand.

  1. Check moisture

Dry, damp and wet sand differ in density; damp sand bulks up and fills more space.

  2. Pick the density

Use the table value for your sand type and condition.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the sand weight in kilograms or convert tonnes × 1,000.

  4. Read the volume

Divide liters by 1,000 for cubic meters or by 764.6 for cubic yards.

Sand Converter Formula

The sand formula is V = m ÷ ρsand. Cubic meters equal tonnes ÷ ρsand.

V (L) = m (kg) ÷ ρsand
V (m³) = m (t) ÷ ρsand
V (yd³) = V (m³) × 1.308
ρsand
Sand bulk density, kg/L (equal to t/m³)

Worked Examples

  • Bulk bag: 850 kg ÷ 1.60 = 531.3 L (0.53 m³).
  • 20 t truck of dry sand: 20 ÷ 1.60 = 12.50 m³ (16.35 yd³).
  • Play sand bag: 25 kg ÷ 1.55 = 16.13 L.

Sand Converter Conversion Table

1 tonne of dry loose sand fills 0.625 m³. The table lists 7 sand conditions.

What is a Sand Converter?

A Sand Converter is a calculator that converts sand weight into volume using bulk density for the sand type and moisture.

Sand grains are mostly quartz at 2.65 kg/L. Gaps between grains drop the bulk density of dry loose sand to about 1.60 kg/L.

Damp sand bulks: thin water films push grains apart, and volume can grow 20–30% at 4–6% moisture. Fully wet sand collapses the films, fills gaps with water and reaches about 1.92 kg/L.

What are the Uses of a Sand Converter?

There are 5 main uses of a Sand Converter.

  • Material ordering

Builders convert tonne prices into cubic meters needed.

  • Sandbox filling

Parents convert bag weights into box volume.

  • Concrete mixes

Batchers convert sand by volume into kg for mix designs.

  • Haulage limits

Drivers check truck volume against legal weight.

  • Flood defense

Crews estimate sandbag counts from bulk tonnes.
