How the Container Calibration Calculator Works
The Container Calibration Calculator finds the true capacity of a container from the mass of water it holds. The default density of 1.0 kg/L stands in for water; use 0.9982 kg/L at 20°C (68°F) for precise work.
Weigh the empty container
Record the tare mass on a calibrated scale.
Fill to the mark
Fill with clean water to the fill line or brim and weigh again.
Enter the net water mass
Type full mass − empty mass, in kilograms.
Enter water density and read capacity
Type the water density at the measured temperature. The result is the true capacity in liters.
Container Calibration Calculator Formula
The container calibration formula is Capacity (L) = (mfull − mempty) ÷ ρwater(T).
- mfull
- Mass of container filled with water, kg
- mempty
- Mass of empty, dry container, kg
- ρwater(T)
- Water density at the fill temperature, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 20 L jerrycan: (21.10 − 1.05) kg ÷ 0.9982 = 20.086 L, so the can holds 0.45% over nominal.
- Measuring jug: (1.248 − 0.250) kg ÷ 0.9982 = 0.9998 L at the 1 L line.
- Drum at 25°C: 212.4 kg net ÷ 0.99705 = 213.0 L brimful.
Container Calibration Calculator Conversion Table
A container that holds exactly 1 L weighs 0.998 kg more when filled with 20°C water. The table lists the net water mass that confirms common nominal capacities.

What is a Container Calibration Calculator?
A Container Calibration Calculator is a tool that measures the true volume of a container by weighing the water it holds.
Molded and drawn containers vary from their nominal size by 1–3%. Weighing water is the reference method for checking that a container, jug or tank holds what the label claims.
Legal metrology rules such as OIML R 138 and NIST Handbook 44 set tolerances for measuring containers used in trade.
What are the Uses of a Container Calibration Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of a Container Calibration Calculator.
Fill line checks
Packers confirm bottle fill heights hold the declared volume.
Jug and beaker verification
Kitchens and labs check graduation accuracy.
Tank strapping
Technicians build volume tables for small tanks by weighed fills.
Supplier audits
Buyers check that drums and jerrycans meet the spec.
