How the Container Fill Calculator Works
The Container Fill Calculator converts the mass you add to a container into the liters it fills. Compare the result with container capacity to get the fill level.
Enter the mass added
Type the kilograms dispensed or poured into the container.
Enter the contents density
Type the density of the product in kg/L.
Read liters filled
The result shows the volume taken up in the container.
Work out fill percentage
Divide liters filled by container capacity and multiply by 100.
Container Fill Calculator Formula
The container fill formula is Liters filled = Mass added ÷ Density, and Fill % = Liters filled ÷ Capacity × 100.
- Vcap
- Container capacity, L
Worked Examples
- 15 kg of diesel into a 20 L can: 15 ÷ 0.832 = 18.03 L, so fill = 90.1%.
- 25 kg of honey into a 20 L pail: 25 ÷ 1.42 = 17.61 L, so fill = 88.0%.
- 20 kg of olive oil into a 20 L can: 20 ÷ 0.918 = 21.79 L, so the can overflows by 1.79 L.
Container Fill Calculator Conversion Table
18 kg of diesel fills 108.2% of a 20 L jerrycan, while 18 kg of honey fills 63.4%. The table shows fill levels in a 20 L container.
| Mass Added | Water (1.000) | Diesel (0.832) | Olive Oil (0.918) | Milk (1.033) | Honey (1.42) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 kg | 10.0% | 12.0% | 10.9% | 9.7% | 7.0% |

| 20 kg | 100.0% | 120.2% ⚠ | 108.9% ⚠ | 96.8% | 70.4% |
| 25 kg | 125.0% ⚠ | 150.2% ⚠ | 136.2% ⚠ | 121.0% ⚠ | 88.0% |
⚠ marks fills above 100% capacity. Leave 5–10% headspace for thermal expansion.
What is a Container Fill Calculator?
A Container Fill Calculator is a tool that shows how much container volume a given mass of product fills.
Dispensing by weight is faster and more accurate than reading a fill line. The fill calculator turns a scale reading into a volume and a fill percentage.
Light products overfill sooner. 20 kg of water fits a 20 L can exactly, but 20 kg of olive oil needs 21.79 L.
What are the Uses of a Container Fill Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of a Container Fill Calculator.
Overfill prevention
Fillers check headspace before dispensing by weight.
Drum filling
Operators set scale targets that leave 5% ullage.
Recipe vessels
Cooks check pot sizes for weighed batches.
Inventory
Teams convert weighed stock into tank fill levels.
