How the Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator Works
The Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator multiplies container volume by product density to find the mass a full container holds.
Enter the capacity
Type the container volume in liters, such as 208 for a 55 US gal drum.
Enter the density
Type the density of the liquid going into the drum or tote, in kg/L.
Read the mass
The result shows the product mass in kilograms.
Add tare for gross weight
Add the empty container weight for handling and freight.
Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator Formula
The capacity-to-mass formula is Mass (kg) = Capacity (L) × Density (kg/L). Gross weight adds the tare.
- Vcap
- Container capacity, L
- ρ
- Product density, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 200 L drum of diesel: 200 × 0.832 = 166.4 kg, plus 18 kg drum = 184.4 kg gross.
- 1,000 L IBC of 50% NaOH: 1,000 × 1.52 = 1,520 kg, above many 1,500 kg forklift ratings.
- 5 US gal pail of paint: 18.93 L × 1.35 = 25.56 kg.
Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator Conversion Table
A 1,000 L IBC of water holds 1,000 kg; the same IBC of honey holds 1,420 kg. The table lists product mass for 7 container sizes.
| Container | Capacity (L) | Water (kg) | Diesel (kg) | Vegetable Oil (kg) | Paint (kg) | Honey (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 US gal jug | 3.785 | 3.785 | 3.149 | 3.483 | 5.110 | 5.375 |
| 5 L jug | 5.000 | 5.000 | 4.160 | 4.600 | 6.750 | 7.100 |
| 20 L jerrycan | 20.000 | 20.000 | 16.640 | 18.400 | 27.000 | 28.400 |
| 5 US gal pail | 18.927 | 18.927 | 15.747 | 17.413 | 25.552 | 26.876 |
| 55 US gal / 208 L drum | 208.20 | 208.20 | 173.22 | 191.54 | 281.07 | 295.64 |

What is a Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator?
A Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator is a tool that finds how many kilograms of product a container holds when full.
Every container has a weight limit as well as a volume. UN-rated packaging for dangerous goods carries a maximum gross mass and a maximum specific gravity, such as "1.8" on a drum label.
Dense liquids reach weight limits before a container is full. A 1,000 L IBC rated for SG 1.5 cannot carry a full load of 98% sulfuric acid at SG 1.84.
What are the Uses of a Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of a Container Capacity-to-Mass Calculator.
Forklift and racking
Teams check full-container mass against equipment ratings.
Freight booking
Shippers estimate container and pallet weights.
UN packaging limits
Packers check SG ratings on drums and IBCs.
Order sizing
Buyers convert container counts into kg for pricing.
