How the Custom Density Converter Works
The Custom Density Converter accepts any density you type and converts kilograms to liters with that exact value. The default of 1.25 kg/L stands in for a user-supplied product figure.
Find your density
Copy the density or relative density from a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), product data sheet or your own lab test.
Enter it in kg/L
Type the figure into the Density field. Values in g/cm³ or g/mL go in unchanged; divide kg/m³ by 1,000 first.
Type the mass
Enter the batch or drum weight in kilograms.
Read and record
The volume updates live. Note the density next to the answer so the conversion can be repeated later.
Custom Density Converter Formula
The custom density formula is Volume (L) = Mass (kg) ÷ Custom Density (kg/L). Unit conversion of the density value comes first when the source uses kg/m³ or lb/gal.
- ρcustom
- Density you enter, in kg/L
- m
- Mass in kg
- V
- Volume in L
Worked Examples
- SDS density 1,250 kg/m³: 1,250 ÷ 1,000 = 1.25 kg/L, so 10 kg ÷ 1.25 = 8.000 L.
- Data sheet 9.5 lb/gal: 9.5 ÷ 8.3454 = 1.1384 kg/L, so 20 kg ÷ 1.1384 = 17.569 L.
- Lab result 0.964 g/mL: 0.964 g/mL = 0.964 kg/L, so 5 kg ÷ 0.964 = 5.187 L.
Custom Density Converter Conversion Table
1 kg of a 1.25 kg/L product equals 0.800 liters. The table compares 10 kg volumes across custom densities from 0.60 to 2.00 kg/L.
| Custom Density | Density (kg/m³) | lb per US gal | Liters per 1 kg | Liters per 10 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.60 kg/L | 600 | 5.01 | 1.667 | 16.667 |
| 0.80 kg/L | 800 | 6.68 | 1.250 | 12.500 |
| 1.00 kg/L | 1,000 | 8.35 | 1.000 | 10.000 |
| 1.10 kg/L | 1,100 | 9.18 | 0.909 | 9.091 |
| 1.25 kg/L | 1,250 | 10.43 | 0.800 | 8.000 |
| 1.40 kg/L | 1,400 | 11.68 | 0.714 | 7.143 |
| 1.60 kg/L | 1,600 | 13.35 | 0.625 | 6.250 |
| 2.00 kg/L | 2,000 | 16.69 | 0.500 | 5.000 |
What is a Custom Density Converter?
A Custom Density Converter is a kilograms to liters calculator that uses a density value you supply instead of a preset.
Presets cover common liquids, but blended coatings, private-label syrups and laboratory solutions each have their own density. The Custom Density Converter applies that one number to any mass.
Manufacturers publish density in Section 9 of the Safety Data Sheet. The figure appears as density (kg/m³ or g/cm³) or relative density, which equals specific gravity against water.
What are the Uses of a Custom Density Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Custom Density Converter.
Proprietary products
Formulators convert in-house blends with densities no public table lists.
Quality control
QC staff apply the density measured on each production lot.
Supplier data sheets
Buyers convert bought-in chemicals using the density printed on the supplier SDS.
Classroom exercises
Teachers set density problems with any value and check answers live.
