How the Substance Selector Converter Works
The Substance Selector Converter loads a stored density for a chosen material and converts kilograms to liters with that preset. The default preset is whole milk at 1.033 kg/L.
Pick a material
Choose a substance from the conversion table below and copy its density into the Density field.
Enter the mass
Type the kilograms you need to convert.
Compare results
Swap densities to see how 10 kg of milk, oil or fuel fills a different volume.
Save the figure
Copy the liter value for your recipe card, tank log or order sheet.
Substance Selector Converter Formula
The substance selector formula is V = m ÷ ρpreset, where the preset density comes from a reference value at 15–20°C (59–68°F).
- ρpreset
- Stored density of the selected material, kg/L
- m
- Mass in kg
- V
- Volume in L
Worked Examples
- Whole milk preset (1.033 kg/L): 10 kg ÷ 1.033 = 9.681 L.
- Gasoline preset (0.745 kg/L): 10 kg ÷ 0.745 = 13.423 L.
- Mercury preset (13.534 kg/L): 10 kg ÷ 13.534 = 0.739 L.

What is a Substance Selector Converter?
A Substance Selector Converter is a kilograms to liters calculator with a built-in list of material densities, so you convert without looking up a density first.
Choosing the wrong density gives the wrong volume. A preset for diesel instead of gasoline shifts 100 kg by 14 L (134.2 L against 120.2 L). A preset list removes guesswork for everyday materials.
Preset densities reflect typical values at room temperature. Batch-to-batch variation stays within about ±2% for most food liquids and ±3% for fuels.
What are the Uses of a Substance Selector Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Substance Selector Converter.
Quick comparisons
Students compare how equal masses of different liquids fill different volumes.
Kitchen measuring
Home cooks convert milk, oil and honey weights without a reference book.
Small-business stock
Shop owners convert bulk purchases into bottle counts.
Teaching density
Teachers show buoyancy: presets under 1.000 kg/L float on water.
