How the Flour Converter Works
The Flour Converter divides flour mass by flour bulk density. The default 0.53 kg/L matches all-purpose flour spooned into a cup and leveled.
Pick the flour type
Cake, all-purpose, bread, whole wheat and gluten-free flours differ in bulk density.
Match the method
Spoon-and-level gives about 125 g per US cup; scooping packs up to 150 g.
Enter mass and density
Type the kilograms of flour and the density for your method.
Read the volume
Multiply liters by 4.227 for US cups.
Flour Converter Formula
The flour formula is V = m ÷ ρbulk, and grams per cup equals ρbulk × 236.6.
- ρbulk
- Flour bulk density for the filling method, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 1 kg all-purpose flour: 1 ÷ 0.53 = 1.887 L (7.98 cups).
- Bread recipe, 500 g bread flour: 0.5 ÷ 0.54 = 926 mL.
- Scooped and packed: 1 kg ÷ 0.63 = 1.587 L, so the cup count drops by 16%.

What is a Flour Converter?
A Flour Converter is a calculator that converts flour weight into volume using flour bulk density for the measuring method.
Flour is a fluffy powder, and most of a measuring cup holds air. Solid wheat starch weighs about 1.5 kg/L, while poured flour weighs about 0.53 kg/L.
Professional bakers use baker's percentages, with flour weight fixed at 100%. Weighing flour removes the 20% swing between a sifted cup and a packed cup.
What are the Uses of a Flour Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Flour Converter.
US to metric recipes
Bakers convert cup-based recipes into grams.
Storage bins
Bakeries size flour bins and canisters from sack weights.
Bulk delivery
Mills convert tonnes into silo volume for blown deliveries.
Gluten-free swaps
Cooks replace wheat flour with lighter almond or coconut flour.
