How the Granulated Sugar Converter Works
The Granulated Sugar Converter divides sugar mass by sugar bulk density. The default 0.85 kg/L matches white granulated sugar poured and leveled.
Enter the sugar mass
Type the bag or recipe weight in kilograms.
Pick the crystal size
Use 0.85 kg/L for regular, 0.80 kg/L for caster (superfine) or 0.90 kg/L for coarse sanding sugar.
Read the volume
The liter result shows the space in a canister or hopper.
Convert to cups
One US cup of granulated sugar weighs about 200 g.
Granulated Sugar Converter Formula
The granulated sugar formula is V = m ÷ 0.85. Sugar crystals are 1.59 kg/L, so about 47% of a sugar jar is air.
- 0.85
- Bulk density of granulated sugar, kg/L
- 1.59
- Particle density of sucrose crystals, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 1 kg bag: 1 ÷ 0.85 = 1.176 L (4.97 cups).
- 4 lb (1.81 kg) bag: 1.81 ÷ 0.85 = 2.129 L.
- 25 kg sack: 25 ÷ 0.85 = 29.41 L.
Granulated Sugar Converter Conversion Table
1 kg of granulated sugar fills 1.176 liters, or about 5 US cups. The table converts common sugar bag sizes.

What is a Granulated Sugar Converter?
A Granulated Sugar Converter is a calculator that converts white sugar weight into volume using the bulk density of granulated sugar crystals.
Granulated sugar is 99.9% sucrose refined from sugar cane or sugar beet. Regular crystals measure 0.3–0.6 mm across.
Smaller crystals leave smaller gaps, but caster sugar packs looser in practice and weighs less per cup. Coarse sanding sugar sits heavier per cup than regular sugar.
What are the Uses of a Granulated Sugar Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Granulated Sugar Converter.
Baking
Bakers convert cup measures into grams for consistent cakes.
Jam making
Cooks convert sugar weights for fruit-to-sugar ratios.
Canister sizing
Shoppers check how much sugar a jar holds.
Industrial hoppers
Confectioners size dosing hoppers from sack weights.
