How the Powdered Sugar Converter Works

The Powdered Sugar Converter divides powdered (confectioners) sugar mass by its bulk density. The default 0.56 kg/L fits sugar scooped from the bag.

  1. Choose the method

Sifted, spooned, scooped and packed powdered sugar differ by up to 55% in density.

  2. Pick the density

    Use 0.44 kg/L sifted, 0.51 kg/L spooned, 0.56 kg/L scooped or 0.68 kg/L packed.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the kilograms of powdered sugar.

  4. Read the volume

Convert liters to cups for frosting recipes.

Powdered Sugar Converter Formula

The powdered sugar formula is V = m ÷ ρmethod. Sifting adds air and drops density by about 21% against scooping.

V = m ÷ ρmethod
g per cup = ρ × 236.6
ρmethod
Bulk density for the filling method, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Sifted for icing: 250 g ÷ 0.44 = 568 mL (2.40 cups).
  • Scooped: 250 g ÷ 0.56 = 446 mL.
  • 1 lb (454 g) box, spooned: 454 ÷ 0.51 = 890 mL (3.76 cups).

Powdered Sugar Converter Conversion Table

1 US cup of sifted powdered sugar weighs about 104 g, against 132 g scooped. The table lists 5 measuring methods.

What is a Powdered Sugar Converter?

A Powdered Sugar Converter is a calculator that converts confectioners sugar weight into volume using a density matched to sifting or packing.

Powdered sugar is granulated sugar milled into a fine powder. US 10X powdered sugar contains about 3% cornstarch to stop caking; icing sugar in the UK often contains none.

Fine particles trap a lot of air and pack unevenly. Weighing powdered sugar gives the most repeatable frosting texture.

What are the Uses of a Powdered Sugar Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Powdered Sugar Converter.

  • Frosting and icing

Decorators convert cup-based buttercream recipes into grams.

  • Macarons

Pastry chefs weigh tant pour tant mixes and check bowl volume.

  • Dusting stations

Bakeries convert bag weights into shaker refills.

  • Confectionery

    Candy makers scale fondant batches.
