How the Isopropyl Alcohol Converter Works

The Isopropyl Alcohol Converter divides isopropyl alcohol (IPA) mass by density at its water content. The default 0.786 kg/L fits 99% IPA at 20°C (68°F).

  1. Read the strength

Check the label: 99%, 91% or 70% IPA by volume.

  2. Pick the density

Read the density for that strength from the table.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the IPA weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

Use the volume for wipes, cleaning and dilution.

Isopropyl Alcohol Converter Formula

The IPA formula is V = m ÷ ρ(%). Water raises the density, so 70% rubbing alcohol is about 12% heavier per liter than 99% IPA.

V = m ÷ ρ(%)
V99% × 99 = Vfinal × Cfinal (dilution, by volume)
Cfinal
Target IPA strength, % v/v

Worked Examples

  • 99% IPA: 5 kg ÷ 0.786 = 6.361 L.
  • 70% rubbing alcohol: 5 kg ÷ 0.877 = 5.701 L.
  • Dilution: 1 L of 99% IPA makes 99 ÷ 70 = 1.414 L of about 70% IPA.

Isopropyl Alcohol Converter Conversion Table

99% isopropyl alcohol weighs 0.786 kg/L, while 70% IPA weighs about 0.877 kg/L at 20°C. The table lists 5 common strengths.

What is an Isopropyl Alcohol Converter?

An Isopropyl Alcohol Converter is a calculator that converts IPA weight into volume using density at the alcohol strength.

Isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol, C₃H₈O) cleans electronics, disinfects skin and dissolves flux. 99% IPA dries fast without residue on circuit boards.

70% IPA kills microbes better than 99% IPA. The water slows evaporation and helps the alcohol denature proteins inside the cell.

What are the Uses of an Isopropyl Alcohol Converter?

There are 4 main uses of an Isopropyl Alcohol Converter.

  • Electronics cleaning

Repair shops convert drum weights into bottle fills.

  • Healthcare disinfection

Clinics dilute 99% IPA to 70% by volume.

  • 3D printing

Resin printer users convert IPA wash tank fills.

  • Lab inventory

Labs convert IPA stock weights into liters.
