How the Solvent Converter Works

The Solvent Converter divides solvent mass by the density of the chosen solvent. The default 0.86 kg/L fits xylene.

  1. Pick the solvent

    Choose from 14 organic solvents in the table.

  2. Enter the density

    Type the table value at 20°C.

  3. Enter the mass

    Type the solvent weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

    Use the volume for dilution, cleaning and waste records.

Solvent Converter Formula

The solvent formula is V = m ÷ ρsolvent. Chlorinated solvents sink in water; hydrocarbon solvents float.

V = m ÷ ρsolvent
m = V × ρsolvent
ρsolvent
Solvent density at 20°C, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Xylene: 17 kg ÷ 0.86 = 19.77 L.
  • Hexane: 10 kg ÷ 0.655 = 15.27 L.
  • Dichloromethane: 20 L × 1.33 = 26.6 kg.

Solvent Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of xylene fills 1.163 liters, while 1 kg of dichloromethane fills 0.752 liters. The table lists 14 solvents at 20°C.

What is a Solvent Converter?

A Solvent Converter is a calculator that converts organic solvent weight into volume using the density of each solvent.

Organic solvents dissolve resins, oils, inks and greases. Solvents split into hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, esters, ethers and chlorinated solvents.

Density matters for safety. Light hydrocarbon solvents form flammable vapor layers, and heavy chlorinated vapors pool at floor level in pits and tanks.

What are the Uses of a Solvent Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Solvent Converter.

  • Paint thinning

    Painters convert thinner weights into dilution volumes.

  • Solvent recovery

    Recyclers convert recovered kg into reusable liters.

  • VOC permits

    Plants convert liters used into tonnes emitted.

  • Lab stock

    Labs convert bottle weights into mL left.
