How the Liquid Chemical Converter Works

The Liquid Chemical Converter divides chemical mass by the density in Section 9 of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). The default 1.10 kg/L is a placeholder for your product value.

  1. Open the SDS

Find "Density" or "Relative density" in Section 9, Physical and Chemical Properties.

  2. Enter the density

Type the value in kg/L; relative density equals kg/L against water.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the chemical weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

Check drum, IBC and bund volumes from the result.

Liquid Chemical Converter Formula

The liquid chemical formula is V = m ÷ ρSDS. Bund capacity must hold 110% of the largest container in many regulations.

V = m ÷ ρSDS
Bund volume ≥ 1.10 × Largest container volume

Worked Examples

  • Sulfuric acid 98%: 250 kg ÷ 1.84 = 135.87 L.
  • Sodium hydroxide 50%: 1,500 kg IBC ÷ 1.52 = 986.8 L.
  • Bund for a 1,000 L IBC: 1.10 × 1,000 = 1,100 L.

Liquid Chemical Converter Conversion Table

Sulfuric acid at 98% weighs 1.84 kg/L, so a 1,000 L IBC holds 1,840 kg. The table lists 11 industrial liquid chemicals.

What is a Liquid Chemical Converter?

A Liquid Chemical Converter is a calculator that converts any liquid chemical weight into volume using the density from its Safety Data Sheet.

Every hazardous chemical sold in the US, EU and many other regions carries a 16-section SDS under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Section 9 lists density, boiling point, flash point and pH.

Container ratings are set by volume, but forklifts, racking and trucks are rated by mass. A 1,000 L IBC of sulfuric acid weighs 1.84 t plus about 60 kg of tote.

What are the Uses of a Liquid Chemical Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Liquid Chemical Converter.

  • Bund and spill sizing

HSE teams size containment for stored volumes.

  • Dosing pumps

Water treatment plants convert kg/day into L/h.

  • Load safety

Warehouse staff check IBC weights against forklift ratings.

  • Regulatory reporting

Sites convert liters stored into tonnes for permit thresholds.
