How the Primer Converter Works

The Primer Converter divides primer mass by primer density. The default 1.28 kg/L fits a high-build sealing primer.

  1. Pick the primer type

Drywall, bonding, oil-based, epoxy, shellac and zinc-rich primers differ in density.

  2. Enter the density

Use the data sheet or the table value; zinc-rich primers exceed the 3.0 slider, so type the value.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the primer weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

Multiply by the spread rate to plan coverage.

Primer Converter Formula

The primer formula is V = m ÷ ρprimer. Practical coverage allows for surface porosity and loss: Practical = Theoretical × (1 − Loss %).

V = m ÷ ρprimer
Practical coverage = Theoretical × (1 − Loss)
Loss
Fraction lost to absorption, overspray and waste (0.2–0.4)

Worked Examples

  • Drywall primer: 18 kg ÷ 1.30 = 13.85 L.
  • Zinc-rich primer: 10 kg ÷ 2.70 = 3.704 L.
  • Coverage on porous block: 10 m²/L × (1 − 0.35) = 6.5 m²/L.

Primer Converter Conversion Table

1 liter of drywall PVA primer weighs about 1.30 kg. The table lists 7 primer types.

What is a Primer Converter?

A Primer Converter is a calculator that converts primer weight into volume using the density of the primer type.

Primer prepares a surface for topcoats. Primers seal porous drywall, block stains, bond to glossy surfaces or stop rust on steel.

Zinc-rich primers carry 65–90% zinc dust in the dry film and weigh 2.5–3.0 kg/L. The zinc corrodes in place of the steel, a method called cathodic protection.

What are the Uses of a Primer Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Primer Converter.

  • New drywall

Decorators convert pail weights into rooms primed.

  • Steel protection

Fabricators convert zinc primer kg into coated area.

  • Spray gun loading

Painters fill pressure pots by weight.

  • Inventory

Stores teams convert open pail weights into liters left.
