How the Vegetable Oil Blend Converter Works

The Vegetable Oil Blend Converter divides the mass of a blended frying oil by the blend density. The default 0.920 kg/L fits soybean, corn and canola blends.

  1. Read the blend label

Check the oils listed and their order on the jug or bag-in-box.

  2. Use the blend density

Keep 0.920 kg/L, or calculate the weighted density with the formula below.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the container weight, such as 15.88 kg for a 35 lb jug-in-box (JIB).

  4. Read the liters

The result shows the liters for fryer and storage planning.

Vegetable Oil Blend Converter Formula

The blend density formula is 1 ÷ ρblend = Σ (wi ÷ ρi), where wi is the mass fraction of each oil.

1 ÷ ρblend = w1/ρ1 + w2/ρ2 + …
V = m ÷ ρblend
wi
Mass fraction of oil i (sums to 1)
ρi
Density of oil i, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • 60% soybean (0.917) + 40% canola (0.915): ρ = 1 ÷ (0.6/0.917 + 0.4/0.915) = 0.9162 kg/L.
  • 35 lb JIB: 15.88 kg ÷ 0.920 = 17.26 L (4.56 US gal).
  • Olive pomace blend (20% olive, 80% sunflower): ρ = 0.9196 kg/L.

What is a Vegetable Oil Blend Converter?

A Vegetable Oil Blend Converter is a calculator that turns the weight of a blended frying oil into liters using the weighted density of the oils in the blend.

Food-service oils mix soybean, canola, corn, cottonseed or palm oils to balance price, smoke point and fry life. Labels list the oils in order of weight.

Blend densities stay between 0.914 and 0.922 kg/L. Partially hydrogenated shortening blends run slightly higher, near 0.925 kg/L at room temperature.

What are the Uses of a Vegetable Oil Blend Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Vegetable Oil Blend Converter.

  • Restaurant ordering

Managers convert pounds on invoices into fryer liters.

  • Oil life tracking

Kitchens log top-up volume per day of frying.

  • Blend formulation

Refiners compute the density of a new blend recipe.

  • Grease trap reporting

Operators convert waste oil weights for compliance records.
