How the Wood Pellet Converter Works
The Wood Pellet Converter divides pellet mass by pellet bulk density. The default 0.65 kg/L fits ENplus A1 heating pellets.
Enter the pellet mass
Type the delivery weight in kilograms: 15 kg per bag or 1,000 kg per tonne.
Keep the bulk density
ENplus and EN ISO 17225-2 require at least 0.60 kg/L; most pellets sit at 0.63–0.70 kg/L.
Read the volume
The liter result shows the space needed in the store or hopper.
Add headroom
Pellet stores lose about one third of volume to slopes and empty corners, so size for 1.5 times the pellet volume.
Wood Pellet Converter Formula
The wood pellet formula is V = m ÷ 0.65. Pellet heat content is about 4.8 kWh per kg.
- ρpellet
- Pellet bulk density, kg/L
- 4.8
- Net calorific value of wood pellets, kWh/kg
Worked Examples
- 15 kg bag: 15 ÷ 0.65 = 23.08 L.
- 1 tonne: 1,000 ÷ 0.65 = 1,538 L (1.54 m³).
- Heating season of 5 t: store size ≈ 5 × 1.5 ÷ 0.65 = 11.5 m³.
Wood Pellet Converter Conversion Table
1 tonne of wood pellets fills 1.54 m³ and holds about 4,800 kWh of heat. The table converts pellet quantities into volume and energy.
| Pellet Mass | Volume (L) | Volume (m³) | Volume (ft³) | Energy (kWh) | Heating Oil Equivalent (L) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kg (22 lb) | 15.385 | 0.015 | 0.543 | 48 | 5 |
| 15 kg (33 lb) | 23.077 | 0.023 | 0.815 | 72 | 7 |
| 18.14 kg (40 lb) | 27.908 | 0.028 | 0.986 | 87 | 9 |
| 20 kg (44 lb) | 30.769 | 0.031 | 1.087 | 96 | 10 |
| 100 kg (220 lb) | 153.85 | 0.154 | 5.433 | 480 | 48 |
| 500 kg (1,102 lb) | 769.23 | 0.769 | 27.165 | 2,400 | 240 |
| 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) | 1,538.5 | 1.538 | 54.330 | 4,800 | 480 |
| 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) | 3,076.9 | 3.077 | 108.66 | 9,600 | 960 |
| 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) | 4,615.4 | 4.615 | 162.99 | 14,400 | 1,440 |
| 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) | 9,230.8 | 9.231 | 325.98 | 28,800 | 2,880 |
Heating oil equivalent uses 10 kWh per liter of heating oil. 18.14 kg equals one 40 lb bag, the common US retail size.
What is a Wood Pellet Converter?
A Wood Pellet Converter is a calculator that converts wood pellet weight into storage volume and heat energy.
Wood pellets are sawdust pressed through a die at high pressure into 6 or 8 mm cylinders. Lignin in the wood melts and binds the pellet without glue.
Pellet particle density reaches 1.1–1.3 kg/L, but air between the cylinders cuts bulk density to about 0.65 kg/L. ENplus A1 caps moisture at 10% and ash at 0.7%.
What are the Uses of a Wood Pellet Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Wood Pellet Converter.
Pellet store sizing
Installers size boiler stores for a year of fuel.
Bulk delivery orders
Homeowners order tonnes that fit the free store volume.
Stove hopper fills
Users count bags per hopper load.
Fuel cost comparison
Buyers compare pellet cost per kWh with oil and gas.
