How the Coffee Bean Converter Works

The Coffee Bean Converter divides whole bean mass by bean bulk density. The default 0.38 kg/L fits medium roast whole beans.

  1. Know the roast

Darker roasts lose more mass and puff up more, so they weigh less per liter.

  2. Enter the density

Use 0.42 kg/L for light roast, 0.38 kg/L for medium and 0.34 kg/L for dark.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the bag weight in kilograms: 0.34 for a 12 oz bag.

  4. Read the volume

Check whether the beans fit your grinder hopper or storage canister.

Coffee Bean Converter Formula

The coffee bean formula is V = m ÷ ρroast. Roasting drops density from about 0.69 kg/L green to 0.34–0.42 kg/L roasted.

V = m ÷ ρroast
Roast loss (%) = (mgreen − mroasted) ÷ mgreen × 100
ρroast
Bulk density of roasted beans, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • 1 kg bag, medium roast: 1 ÷ 0.38 = 2.632 L.
  • 12 oz (340 g) bag, dark roast: 0.34 ÷ 0.34 = 1.000 L.
  • Roast loss: 10 kg green → 8.5 kg roasted is a 15% mass loss.

Coffee Bean Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of medium roast whole coffee beans fills 2.632 liters. The table compares green and roasted beans.

What is a Coffee Bean Converter?

A Coffee Bean Converter is a calculator that converts whole coffee bean weight into volume using bean bulk density for the roast level.

Roasting drives off 12–20% of bean mass as water and gases while the bean cell structure expands by 50–100%. The result is a lighter, larger bean.

Coffee beans carry trade grades by screen size: screen 18 means beans that stay on a sieve with 18/64-inch (7.1 mm) holes.

What are the Uses of a Coffee Bean Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Coffee Bean Converter.

  • Hopper sizing

Cafés check how many kilograms fit in a grinder hopper.

  • Roastery packing

Roasters size bags and valves for each roast level.

  • Storage canisters

Home brewers pick airtight canisters for a 1 kg bag.

  • Green coffee import

Importers convert 60 kg sacks into container volume.
