How the Diesel Converter Works

The Diesel Converter divides diesel mass by fuel density. The default 0.832 kg/L sits in the middle of the EN 590 range of 0.820–0.845 kg/L at 15°C (59°F).

  1. Enter the diesel mass

Type the kilograms from a delivery ticket, weighbridge or tank gauge.

  2. Use the delivery density

Copy the density at 15°C from the fuel delivery note for the most exact answer.

  3. Read the liters

The result shows standard liters at 15°C.

  4. Convert to gallons or barrels

Use the table for US gallons and 42-gallon oil barrels.

Diesel Converter Formula

The diesel formula is Liters = Kilograms ÷ 0.832. One metric tonne of diesel equals about 1,202 L, 317.6 US gallons or 7.56 barrels.

V = m ÷ ρ15
1 t diesel ≈ 1,202 L ≈ 7.56 bbl
ρ15
Diesel density at 15°C from the delivery note, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Tank truck: 30,000 kg ÷ 0.832 = 36,058 L.
  • Generator day tank: 800 kg ÷ 0.840 = 952.4 L.
  • Vehicle fill: 60 L × 0.832 = 49.92 kg of fuel (110.1 lb).

Diesel Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of diesel equals 1.202 liters (0.318 US gal). The table converts diesel masses into liters, gallons and barrels.

What is a Diesel Converter?

A Diesel Converter is a calculator that converts diesel fuel weight into volume using diesel density at a reference temperature.

Diesel is a middle distillate of crude oil with carbon chains of about C10 to C22. Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) in the US and EN 590 diesel in Europe cap sulfur at 15 ppm and 10 ppm.

Fuel is traded by mass at refineries and sold by volume at the pump. A delivery of 30 t at 0.832 kg/L gives 36,058 L, while the same mass at 0.845 kg/L gives 35,503 L, a 555 L gap.

What are the Uses of a Diesel Converter?

There are 5 main uses of a Diesel Converter.

  • Fuel delivery checks

Site managers compare delivered liters with invoiced tonnes.

  • Fleet fuel budgets

Operators convert tonne contracts into pump liters.

  • Generator planning

Engineers size day tanks for backup generators.

  • Marine bunkering

Ship crews convert bunker tonnes into tank soundings.

  • Carbon reporting

Teams convert liters into kg for 2.68 kg CO₂ per liter emissions factors.
