How the Gasoline / Petrol Converter Works

The Gasoline / Petrol Converter divides gasoline mass by the density of the fuel grade. The default 0.745 kg/L fits regular unleaded at 15°C (59°F).

  1. Pick the grade

Regular, premium, E10, E85 and aviation gasoline differ in density.

  2. Enter the density

Use the table value or the delivery note density at 15°C.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the gasoline weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

The result gives the fuel volume for tanks and cans.

Gasoline / Petrol Converter Formula

The gasoline formula is Liters = Kilograms ÷ 0.745. One kilogram of regular petrol fills about 1.342 L.

V = m ÷ ρgrade
ρE10 ≈ 0.9 × ρgasoline + 0.1 × 0.789
ρgrade
Density of the gasoline grade, kg/L
0.789
Density of ethanol, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Regular: 40 kg ÷ 0.745 = 53.69 L.
  • E10 blend: ρ = 0.9 × 0.740 + 0.1 × 0.789 = 0.7449 kg/L.
  • Avgas 100LL: 100 L × 0.72 = 72.0 kg (6.0 lb per US gal).

Gasoline / Petrol Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of regular gasoline equals 1.342 liters. The table lists 7 gasoline grades at 15°C.

What is a Gasoline / Petrol Converter?

A Gasoline / Petrol Converter is a calculator that converts gasoline weight into volume using the density of the fuel grade.

Gasoline is a blend of light hydrocarbons, C4 to C12, from refinery streams such as reformate, alkylate and cracked naphtha. Aromatic compounds such as toluene raise density; light alkanes such as butane lower it.

EN 228 limits European petrol density to 0.720–0.775 kg/L at 15°C. Gasoline expands about 0.1% per °C, so pump volumes vary with weather.

What are the Uses of a Gasoline / Petrol Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Gasoline / Petrol Converter.

  • Fuel station reconciliation

Station owners compare tanker mass with dispensed liters.

  • Small engine fuel

Users convert fuel weights for chainsaws and generators.

  • Light aircraft weight

Pilots convert avgas liters into weight and balance figures.

  • Shipping dangerous goods

Shippers convert volume to mass for UN1203 limits.
