How the Ground Coffee Converter Works

The Ground Coffee Converter divides ground coffee mass by bulk density for the grind size. The default 0.45 kg/L fits a fine espresso grind.

  1. Know the grind

Turkish, espresso, drip, pour-over and French press grinds pack differently.

  2. Enter the density

Use the table value for your grind size.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the coffee weight in kilograms, such as 0.018 for an 18 g espresso dose.

  4. Read the volume

Use the result to pick a scoop or check a filter basket.

Ground Coffee Converter Formula

The ground coffee formula is V = m ÷ ρgrind. A standard coffee scoop holds 2 tablespoons (29.6 mL).

V = m ÷ ρgrind
Brew ratio = water (g) ÷ coffee (g)

Bulk density for the grind size, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Espresso dose: 18 g ÷ 0.45 = 40 mL of loose grounds before tamping.
  • Drip pot: 60 g ÷ 0.40 = 150 mL, about 5 scoops.
  • 1:16 brew ratio: 60 g of coffee needs 960 g (960 mL) of water.

Ground Coffee Converter Conversion Table

A level coffee scoop (2 tbsp) holds about 11.8 g of medium drip grind. The table lists 6 grind sizes.

What is a Ground Coffee Converter?

A Ground Coffee Converter is a calculator that converts ground coffee weight into volume using bulk density for the grind size.

Grinding breaks roasted beans into particles from 200 µm for Turkish coffee to 1,000 µm for French press. Fine particles fill gaps between each other and raise bulk density.

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Golden Cup standard calls for 55 g of coffee per liter of water, give or take 10%.

What are the Uses of a Ground Coffee Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Ground Coffee Converter.

  • Scoop calibration

Cafés convert gram recipes into scoop counts for staff.

  • Filter basket checks

    Baristas confirm a dose fits a 15 g, 18 g or 21 g basket.

  • Office coffee

Managers convert bulk bags into pot counts.

  • Packaging

Roasters size bags for pre-ground coffee.
