How the Milk Converter Works

The Milk Converter divides milk mass by milk density. The default 1.033 kg/L fits whole cow milk at about 15°C (59°F).

  1. Pick the milk type

    Select whole, semi-skimmed, skim, goat, sheep or buffalo milk from the table below.

  2. Enter the density

    Type the matching density; dairies read it with a lactometer.

  3. Enter the mass

    Type the kilograms from the bulk tank scale or recipe.

  4. Read the liters

    The result gives the milk volume for jugs, cartons or churns.

Milk Converter Formula

The milk kg to liters formula is Liters = Kilograms ÷ 1.033 for whole milk. Fat lowers density; protein, lactose and minerals raise it.

V = m ÷ ρmilk
ρmilk = 1 + (Lactometer Reading ÷ 1000)
ρmilk
Milk density, 1.028–1.036 kg/L
LR
Quevenne lactometer reading, such as 32 for 1.032 kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Whole milk: 10 kg ÷ 1.033 = 9.681 L.
  • Bulk tank: 5,000 kg of milk ÷ 1.032 = 4,845.0 L.
  • Lactometer reading 29: density 1.029 kg/L, a sign of added water or high fat.

Milk Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of whole milk equals 0.968 liters, and 1 L of whole milk weighs 1.033 kg (2.28 lb). The table lists 7 milk types.

What is a Milk Converter?

A Milk Converter is a calculator that changes milk weight in kilograms into volume in liters using the density of the chosen milk type.

Dairies buy milk from farmers by weight and sell milk to shoppers by volume. The Milk Converter links both figures with one density value.

Cow milk is about 87% water, 4.8% lactose, 3.4% protein, 3.5% fat and 0.7% minerals. The non-fat solids make milk heavier than water, and the fat pulls density back down.

What are the Uses of a Milk Converter?

There are 5 main uses of a Milk Converter.

  • Farm milk collection

    Collectors convert tanker weights into liters for farmer payments.

  • Dairy processing

    Plants plan carton and bottle runs from kilograms received.

  • Baby formula and feeding

    Parents convert breast milk or formula weights into milliliters.

  • Baking recipes

    Bakers convert weighed milk into cup or liter measures.

  • Adulteration checks

    Inspectors spot watered milk by low density.
