How the Yogurt Converter Works

The Yogurt Converter divides yogurt mass by yogurt density. The default 1.06 kg/L fits plain set yogurt.

  1. Choose the yogurt style

    Drinking yogurt, plain, Greek and skyr have different protein and water levels.

  2. Enter the density

    Type the density from the table; level a measuring cup without air pockets for a home check.

  3. Enter the mass

    Type the kilograms from the tub label or scale.

  4. Read the volume

    The result shows liters; multiply by 4.23 for US cups.

Yogurt Converter Formula

The yogurt conversion formula is V = m ÷ ρyogurt, with ρyogurt between 1.03 and 1.10 kg/L.

V = m ÷ ρyogurt
Cups = V (L) ÷ 0.2366
ρyogurt
Yogurt density, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Plain yogurt tub: 1 kg ÷ 1.06 = 0.943 L (3.99 cups).
  • Greek yogurt: 500 g ÷ 1.08 kg/L = 463 mL.
  • Drinking yogurt: 250 g ÷ 1.04 = 240 mL.

Yogurt Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of plain yogurt fills 0.943 liters, about 4 US cups. The table lists 6 yogurt styles.

What is a Yogurt Converter?

A Yogurt Converter is a calculator that converts yogurt weight into volume using the density of the chosen yogurt style.

Yogurt forms when Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus ferment milk lactose into lactic acid. The acid sets milk protein into a gel slightly denser than milk.

Straining removes whey and raises protein. Greek yogurt holds about 10% protein and skyr about 11%, against 3.5% for plain yogurt, which pushes density higher.

What are the Uses of a Yogurt Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Yogurt Converter.

  • Recipe swaps

    Bakers replace sour cream or buttermilk by volume.

  • Cup filling

    Producers set filler volumes for 125 g and 500 g pots.

  • Meal prep

    Home cooks portion yogurt for marinades and sauces.

  • Nutrition tracking

    Dieters convert cup servings into grams for apps.
