How the Milk Powder Converter Works

The Milk Powder Converter divides powdered milk mass by its bulk density. The default 0.55 kg/L fits regular spray-dried milk powder.

  1. Pick the powder

Instant nonfat, regular nonfat, whole milk powder, infant formula and whey protein differ in density.

  2. Enter the density

Use the table value; agglomerated "instant" powders are much lighter.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the powder weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the volume

Use the liters for tins and scoops, or reconstitute with the formula below.

Milk Powder Converter Formula

The milk powder formula is Vpowder = m ÷ ρbulk. Reconstituting 100 g of nonfat powder with water makes about 1 L of skim milk.

Vpowder = m ÷ ρbulk
Skim milk (L) ≈ powder (g) ÷ 100
ρbulk
Bulk density of the powder, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Regular nonfat powder: 1 kg ÷ 0.55 = 1.818 L of powder.
  • Instant nonfat powder: 1 kg ÷ 0.30 = 3.333 L, nearly twice the volume.
  • Reconstitution: 1 kg of nonfat powder makes about 10 L of skim milk.

Milk Powder Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of regular spray-dried milk powder fills 1.818 liters. The table lists 6 dairy powders.

What is a Milk Powder Converter?

A Milk Powder Converter is a calculator that converts dairy powder weight into volume using powder bulk density.

Milk powder is made by spray drying: concentrated milk is atomized into hot air at 180–220°C, and droplets dry into particles in seconds. Moisture ends below 4%.

Instant milk powder goes through agglomeration, which clumps fine particles into porous granules. The granules dissolve fast in cold water but weigh about half as much per cup.

What are the Uses of a Milk Powder Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Milk Powder Converter.

  • Emergency storage

Households convert stored kilograms into liters of milk.

  • Bread and confectionery

Bakers add milk solids by weight and check scoop volume.

  • Infant feeding

Parents check how many scoops a tin holds.

  • Dairy exports

Exporters convert 25 kg bag counts into pallet and container volume.
