How the Molasses Converter Works
The Molasses Converter divides molasses mass by the density of the molasses grade. The default 1.41 kg/L fits blackstrap and feed molasses.
Pick the grade
Light (first boil), dark (second boil), blackstrap (third boil) and beet molasses differ in sugar and minerals.
Enter the density
Use the table value for your grade.
Enter the mass
Type the jar, pail or tank weight in kilograms.
Read the liters
Warm molasses pours faster but keeps the same mass per liter within about 1%.
Molasses Converter Formula
The molasses formula is V = m ÷ ρmolasses, with ρ between 1.36 and 1.45 kg/L.
- ρmolasses
- Molasses density for the grade, kg/L
- m
- Mass in kg
- V
- Volume in L
Worked Examples
- Blackstrap tub: 1 kg ÷ 1.41 = 709.2 mL.
- Feed tank: 1,000 kg ÷ 1.40 = 714.3 L.
- Light baking molasses: 340 g ÷ 1.37 = 248.2 mL.
Molasses Converter Conversion Table
1 kg of blackstrap molasses fills 709 mL. The table compares 6 molasses grades.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light / mild (first boil) | 1.370 | 0.730 | 11.43 | 324 | ≈ 75 °Brix |
| Dark / full (second boil) | 1.390 | 0.719 | 11.60 | 329 | ≈ 77 °Brix |
| Blackstrap (third boil) | 1.430 | 0.699 | 11.93 | 338 | ≈ 83 °Brix |
| Sugar beet molasses | 1.380 | 0.725 | 11.52 | 326 | ≈ 76 °Brix |
| Cane feed molasses | 1.400 | 0.714 | 11.68 | 331 | ≈ 78 °Brix |
| Pomegranate molasses | 1.330 | 0.752 | 11.10 | 315 | Fruit reduction |
What is a Molasses Converter?
A Molasses Converter is a calculator that converts the weight of molasses into volume using the density of the molasses grade.
Molasses is the dark syrup left after sugar crystals are spun out of boiled cane or beet juice. Each extra boil removes more sugar and concentrates minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium.
Blackstrap molasses holds about 3.6 mg of iron per tablespoon (20 g). Distillers ferment molasses into rum, and feed mills blend it into livestock rations.
What are the Uses of a Molasses Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Molasses Converter.
Rum distilling
Distillers convert tanker loads into fermenter liters.
Livestock feed
Feed mills convert molasses tonnage into pump dosing rates.
Baking
Bakers convert grams into cups for gingerbread and baked beans.
Soil drenches
Gardeners dilute molasses by volume for soil biology.
