How the Sugar Syrup Converter Works

The Sugar Syrup Converter divides syrup mass by a density set by sugar concentration in °Brix. The default 1.28 kg/L fits a syrup near 60 °Brix.

  1. Find the concentration

Read °Brix with a refractometer, or work it out from the sugar and water weights.

  2. Look up the density

Read the density for that °Brix in the table below.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the syrup mass in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

The result shows the syrup volume for bottles, feeders or tanks.

Sugar Syrup Converter Formula

The sugar syrup formula is V = m ÷ ρ(°Brix). °Brix equals sugar mass ÷ total syrup mass × 100.

°Brix = msugar ÷ (msugar + mwater) × 100
V = mtotal ÷ ρ(°Brix)

Worked Examples

  • 1:1 by weight (50 °Brix): 1 kg sugar + 1 kg water = 2 kg ÷ 1.2296 = 1.627 L.
  • 2:1 rich syrup (66.7 °Brix): 2 kg + 1 kg = 3 kg ÷ 1.326 = 2.262 L.
  • Bee feed 1:1 by volume (≈ 46 °Brix): 10 kg ÷ 1.207 = 8.29 L.

Sugar Syrup Converter Conversion Table

A 50 °Brix (1:1) sugar syrup has a density of 1.2296 kg/L at 20°C. The table lists sucrose syrup densities from 10 to 70 °Brix.

What is a Sugar Syrup Converter?

A Sugar Syrup Converter is a calculator that converts the weight of a sugar and water syrup into volume using a density matched to °Brix.

Sucrose dissolves into water and adds mass faster than volume. A 1:1 syrup by weight packs 23% more mass per liter than water.

Bartenders, beekeepers, soda makers and canners all use sugar syrups. Refractometers read °Brix in seconds, and published sucrose tables from ICUMSA give the matching density.

What are the Uses of a Sugar Syrup Converter?

There are 5 main uses of a Sugar Syrup Converter.

  • Cocktail bars

Bartenders batch simple syrup in liters from sugar bags.

  • Beekeeping

Beekeepers mix 1:1 spring syrup and 2:1 autumn syrup.

  • Soft drink production

Bottlers dose syrup by volume into carbonated water.

  • Canning and preserving

Cooks mix light, medium and heavy syrups for fruit.

  • Ice cream mixes

Makers convert liquid sugar deliveries into batch volumes.
