How the Oats Converter Works

The Oats Converter divides oat mass by the bulk density of the oat form. The default 0.41 kg/L fits old-fashioned rolled oats shaken into a container.

  1. Pick the oat form

Instant, quick, rolled, steel-cut, groats and oat flour differ by up to 2 times in density.

  2. Enter the density

Use the table value for your oat form.

  3. Enter the mass

Type the weight of oats in kilograms.

  4. Read the volume

Use liters for storage or cups for recipes.

Oats Converter Formula

The oats formula is V = m ÷ ρoats. Flaking opens air pockets, so rolled oats fill about 1.7 times the space of steel-cut oats.

V = m ÷ ρoats
Volume ratio rolled ÷ steel-cut = 0.68 ÷ 0.41 = 1.66
ρoats
Bulk density for the oat form, kg/L

Worked Examples

  • Rolled oats: 1 kg ÷ 0.41 = 2.439 L (10.31 cups).
  • Steel-cut oats: 1 kg ÷ 0.68 = 1.471 L.
  • One serving: 40 g of rolled oats ÷ 0.41 = 98 mL, a little over ⅓ cup.

Oats Converter Conversion Table

1 kg of rolled oats fills 2.439 liters, over 10 US cups. The table lists 6 oat forms.

What is an Oats Converter?

An Oats Converter is a calculator that converts oat weight into volume using the bulk density of the oat form.

All oat forms start as hulled oat groats. Steel-cut oats are groats chopped into 2–3 pieces; rolled oats are groats steamed and pressed flat; instant oats are rolled thinner and precooked.

Oats contain about 4 g of beta-glucan fiber per 100 g. Nutrition labels list oats per 40 g serving, which a weight-to-volume converter turns into a cup measure.

What are the Uses of an Oats Converter?

There are 4 main uses of an Oats Converter.

  • Breakfast portions

Dieters convert 40 g servings into cup measures.

  • Granola production

Bakers convert sack weights into mixer volume.

  • Horse feed

Owners convert scoop volume into kilograms of whole oats.

  • Recipe swaps

Cooks replace rolled oats with steel-cut by weight.
