How the Rice Converter Works
The Rice Converter divides rice mass by the bulk density of the rice variety and state. The default 0.85 kg/L fits uncooked short or medium grain rice.
Pick the variety
Long grain, basmati, jasmine, short grain, arborio, brown and wild rice differ in shape and packing.
Choose raw or cooked
Cooked rice absorbs water and changes both mass and volume.
Enter mass and density
Type the kilograms and the matching density from the table.
Read the volume
Use the liters for storage bins or the cups for cooking.
Rice Converter Formula
The rice formula is V = m ÷ ρrice. White rice roughly triples in mass when cooked: 1 kg raw becomes about 3 kg cooked.
- ρraw
- Bulk density of uncooked rice, kg/L
- ρcooked
- Bulk density of cooked rice, about 0.67 kg/L
Worked Examples
- Uncooked short grain: 2 kg ÷ 0.85 = 2.353 L.
- Long grain cup: 1 US cup × 0.78 kg/L = 185 g of raw rice.
- Cooked yield: 1 kg raw → 3 kg cooked ÷ 0.67 = 4.48 L of cooked rice.
Rice Converter Conversion Table
1 US cup of uncooked long grain white rice weighs about 185 g. The table lists 8 rice types.

| Jasmine (raw) | 0.800 | 189 | 1.250 | 12.500 |
| Brown rice (raw) | 0.800 | 189 | 1.250 | 12.500 |
| Short / medium grain (raw) | 0.850 | 201 | 1.176 | 11.765 |
| Arborio (raw) | 0.860 | 203 | 1.163 | 11.628 |
| Cooked white rice | 0.670 | 159 | 1.493 | 14.925 |
What is a Rice Converter?
A Rice Converter is a calculator that converts rice weight into volume using bulk density for the rice variety and cooking state.
Rice grain shape sets the packing. Long slender grains such as basmati leave more air gaps than short round grains such as sushi rice and arborio.
Rice feeds more than half the world population. A standard 25 kg (55 lb) sack of long grain rice fills about 32 L and serves about 330 portions of 75 g raw rice.
What are the Uses of a Rice Converter?
There are 4 main uses of a Rice Converter.
Portion planning
Caterers convert kilograms into cups per guest.
Pantry storage
Households size airtight bins for sacks.
Cooker capacity
Cooks check rice cooker cup limits against raw weight.
Food aid logistics
Relief teams convert tonnes into storage volume.
