How the Target Fill Mass Calculator Works
The Target Fill Mass Calculator multiplies the nominal volume of a bottle by product density to give the scale weight at which filling stops. The default 0.918 kg/L fits olive oil.
Enter the nominal volume
Type the label volume in liters, such as 0.75 for a 750 mL bottle.
Enter the product density
Use the density at the filling temperature.
Read the target mass
The result gives the net product mass per bottle.
Set the scale
Add the bottle tare, then program the gross shut-off weight on the filler.
Target Fill Mass Calculator Formula
The target fill formula is Shut-off mass (kg) = Target volume (L) × Density (kg/L) + Tare.
- Vtarget
- Declared volume on the label, L
- ρ(T)
- Product density at filling temperature, kg/L
Worked Examples
- 750 mL olive oil: 0.75 × 0.918 = 688.5 g net.
- 500 mL honey squeeze bottle: 0.5 × 1.42 = 710 g net.
- 1 L IPA with 45 g bottle: 1 × 0.786 + 0.045 = 0.831 kg shut-off.
Target Fill Mass Calculator Conversion Table
A 750 mL bottle of olive oil needs 688.5 g of oil. The table lists net fill masses for common bottle sizes.

What is a Target Fill Mass Calculator?
A Target Fill Mass Calculator is a tool that sets the weight to which a bottle or container is filled so it holds the declared volume.
Gravimetric fillers stop on weight, not volume. Weight filling ignores foam and bottle shape, and gives tighter accuracy than level filling.
The EU average quantity system (℮ mark) and the US NIST Handbook 133 test net contents. Fillers set targets slightly above nominal to keep the average and the tolerable negative error inside the rules.
What are the Uses of a Target Fill Mass Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of a Target Fill Mass Calculator.
Filler programming
Technicians set net and gross targets on weigh fillers.
Quality checks
QC weighs samples against the target mass.
Small-batch bottling
Craft producers fill by weight on a kitchen scale.
Label claims
Brands check that fill weights support the declared volume.
