How the Lubricating Oil Converter Works

The Lubricating Oil Converter divides lubricant mass by the density of the oil grade. The default 0.88 kg/L fits 15W-40 engine oil.

  1. Pick the oil grade

    Engine, gear, transmission and 2-stroke oils differ in density.

  2. Enter the density

    Use the table or the "density at 15°C" line on the product data sheet.

  3. Enter the mass

    Type the drum or sump oil weight in kilograms.

  4. Read the liters

    Use the volume for oil changes and stock records.

Lubricating Oil Converter Formula

The lubricating oil formula is V = m ÷ ρgrade. A 208 L (55 US gal) drum of 15W-40 holds about 183 kg.

V = m ÷ ρgrade
mdrum = 208 L × ρgrade

Worked Examples

  • 15W-40 drum: 208 × 0.88 = 183.0 kg.
  • 0W-20 jug: 4.5 kg ÷ 0.845 = 5.325 L.
  • 80W-90 gear oil: 20 kg ÷ 0.90 = 22.22 L.

Lubricating Oil Converter Conversion Table

1 liter of 15W-40 engine oil weighs 0.880 kg. The table lists 9 lubricant grades with drum weights.

What is a Lubricating Oil Converter?

A Lubricating Oil Converter is a calculator that converts lubricant weight into volume using the density of the oil grade.

Lubricating oils combine base oils, API Groups I to V, with 10–30% additives such as detergents, dispersants, anti-wear zinc compounds and viscosity modifiers.

SAE viscosity grades describe flow, not density. A thicker 20W-50 oil weighs only about 5% more per liter than a thin 0W-20 oil.

What are the Uses of a Lubricating Oil Converter?

There are 4 main uses of a Lubricating Oil Converter.

  • Workshop stock

    Garages convert drum weights into oil changes per drum.

  • Waste oil collection

    Collectors convert tank liters into kg for waste notes.

  • Lubrication schedules

    Plants convert grease and oil kg into liters per machine.

  • Import duties

    Importers declare lubricants by net kilogram.
